5G Future - History of a Billion Smart Phones

Educators in VR Workshop

Doug Hohulin is a Solution Architect for Nokia, and will be discussing the lessons learned from a history of a billion cell and smart phones and what 1 billion 5G users will look like in the future.

5G is a foundation technology to support mobile VR/AR solutions for consumers and enterprise, bringing powerful network access around the world and support for VR/AR where WiFi is not available.

In 1989, there were ~7M cell phones in the world. 25 years later, there were >7B – a 1000x increase and more cell phones than humans. In 2007, the iPhone launched. In 2011, 1 billion smart phones filled the world. When there is a billion of something, things get interesting.

Per statista.com, 7.6M VR/AR headsets were sold in 2019. When will we reach 1B Users? The 21st Century will be the Century of the Billion and Billions.

In the next 20 years we will achieve 5G users, VR/AR Users, Smart Robots, Exoskeleton and AV/UAV/eVTOL.

This presentation explores the history of cell phones/smart phones and what is needed to reach 1B 5G and AV/VR headsets in the next 8 years. Learn about 5G and how it will be a foundation technology to achieve the 1B AV/VR user goal before the end of the decade.
