Recommender systems tell us what to buy, who to friend, and even influence what we believe. Lauded and decried, they power our digital economy. Lauded, for efficiently matchmaking users to, well, almost anything. But also decried, as perhaps the biggest threat to societal cohesion on the internet and our offline world too. I'd love some help finding like-minded metaverse friends and awesome worlds. But I fear the effects of recommender systems on our nascent present-together, shared 3D-world, immersive communities. Please join Sci Tech Chat regulars and NOOBs during the VR/AR Global Summit in a custom 3D world! We'll meet above London on a cool floating platform. Our informal online meetup is unaffiliated with the VR/AR Global Summit, ACM Conference on Recommender Systems, or ACM International Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction, or but we hope you'll attend both and share what you learn and experience.
Note, Charlie Fink, well-known to Alspacers, keynotes the Conference on Mobile Human-Computer Interaction, saying about the oncoming metaverse: "how shall we define it? Who else is building - or has built - a metaverse? What technology does a metaverse require? What might the terminal form be? On which platforms - AR, VR, Mobile - will these virtual, social spaces manifest, when, and how?"
