DEI: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion... What's the difference? Can VR games help? Join us to discuss during the Foundations of Digital Games. This year's theme is Diversity & Inclusion through Games. So our event's theme is Diversity, Equity & Inclusion through VR Games. Imagine you are the newly minted Chief DEI Officer at a major VR game company. One of your divisions is diversifying (see what I did?) into VR-based DEI training. They hired a consultant who came up with a list (and are seeking your input): Race, Ethnicity, Age, National origin, Sexual orientation, Cultural identity, Assigned sex, Gender identity, Physical ability, Mental ability... OK... but here is the rest of the list: Personal interests, Education, Appearance, Citizenship, Religious beliefs, Location, Familial status, Relationship status, Socioeconomic status, Life experiences... And then there is the rest of the rest of the list: Job function, Place of work, Management status, Employment status, Pay type, Seniority, Union affiliation... Wait! Finally: Political beliefs, Moral compass, Outlook on life & Epistemology! Epistemology? ("philosophical study of the nature, origin, and limits of human knowledge") Are all these examples of Diversity? And we've not even gotten to Equity & Inclusion yet. Yes, DEI can be overwhelmingly complex, but it is also so, so important, and not just to VR gamers & DEI trainees, but to society as a whole. Can VR help? Can games help? Can VR games help? Can social VR help? Can social VR games help? Come help sort out definitions, priorities & best practices in a 3D VR model of Montreal, Canada (original venue for FDG 2021). Our informal online event in social VR is unaffiliated with the 16th International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games but we hope you'll attend both and share what you learn and experience at Montreal's famously colorful Métro Beaudry Station!
